Expect The Unexpected

Expect the unexpected, which is the motto of a TV show and has been so appropriate for one recent hurricane we experienced. The weather channel has all kinds of spaghetti models going this way and that. Most seem to merge with each other and for the most part agreed but no matter how the computers track Ė expect the unexpected. They can speed up, slow down, and veer this way or that way. They go over land and break up or go over warm water and increase in strength. The good thing, if there is a good thing, is that you have plenty of time to prepare; well..usually, but, once again; expect the unexpected. You buy your canned goods, water, candles, flashlights; everything is at the ready, just in case. In our family, we had two ends of the spectrum. One family had a hurricane box full of all the essentials; food, paper goods, hurricane lamps, flashlights, a plan in place of what to do. Another family had a small flashlight and two candles. Well the hurricane was coming and even though at our house we didnít need to evacuate, we thought it was prudent to go to a safe place due to two large oak trees that cover our house. So, I guess we werenít that prepared. But guess where we went? Yep, to the house who was ready.

Reminds me of the story of the 10 virgins, 5 were ready and 5 werenít. Five had their food, hurricane lamps filled, windows boarded up, plenty of water and sandbags for protection while the other 5 had just a tiny bit of oil in their lamp, not expecting the unexpected, thinking there would be time to get more if needed.

In our lives, we canít live like we can bum off of others for our salvation. We canít get to Heaven on anyone elseís coat tails because we werenít prepared. Donít think you have plenty of time because you arenít promised tomorrow; expect the unexpected. You need to live each day as if it was your last. When you lay your head down at night or put your feet on the floor in the morning, be ready if Jesus was to come back. The Word says that Jesus will return as a thief in the night, no one knows when it will be, so always be ready. Expect the unexpected.
